Shahani Markus Weerawarana, Ph.D.

Shahani Markus Weerawarana is a Computer Scientist with more than 15 years of global, professional experience. She is a visiting lecturer in the Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and an active participant in the Sri Lankan Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) community.

Most recently, she was the Chief Technology Officer at the ICT Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka, which is the apex agency for ICT policy and implementation in Sri Lanka. At ICTA, Shahani spearheaded the use of FOSS applications in e-Government solutions and actively advocated the importance of Open Standards for interoperability.

Prior to joining the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka, she was the Head of Engineering at Virtusa (Sri Lanka), which is a global software services provider with centers in USA, UK, India and Sri Lanka. At Virtusa, she held overall responsibility for the technical, software quality assurance and R&D tracks, providing leadership to more than 650 engineers. Previously, she worked at Prescient Markets Inc., New York, and at IBM TJ Watson Research Center, New York, USA.

Shahani has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue University, USA. She also has a Masters Degree in Computer Science and a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Purdue University, USA.
